A South Korean boy group under SM Entertainment, debuted on May 25, 2008. Current members are Onew, Key, Minho, and Taemin. Main vocalist Jonghyun passed away in December 2017 and remains a forever member of the group. Their fandom is called SHAWOL.

The name SHINee combines “shine” with the suffix “-ee,” meaning “one who receives light.”

Why SHINee still matters

Seventeen years into their career, SHINee occupy a rare position in K-pop — a group that shaped the industry’s direction so fundamentally that their influence is difficult to trace because it’s everywhere. The performance-heavy, concept-driven approach that defines modern K-pop? SHINee were among the first to build it deliberately, from debut.

They debuted in 2008 as five teenagers introduced as a “contemporary R&B group with the goal of becoming trendsetters in music, fashion, and dance.” That description turned out to be accurate. Singles like “Lucifer,” “Sherlock,” and “View” pushed what K-pop could sound like, incorporating funk, electropop, and experimental production at a time when most groups weren’t. The media dubbed the youth fashion movement they sparked the “SHINee Trend.”

Jonghyun

It’s impossible to write about SHINee without writing about Jonghyun. The group’s main vocalist — widely regarded as one of the finest singers K-pop has produced — passed away in December 2017. His death affected the entire industry and sparked broader conversations about mental health among Korean artists that continue today.

The remaining members made a quiet, deliberate choice: to continue as SHINee, with Jonghyun as a forever member. That decision, and the way they’ve carried it, has defined how both the group and their fanbase have moved forward.

The group that kept going

In the years since, SHINee have done something genuinely unusual — they’ve kept releasing music that holds up. Don’t Call Me (2021) and HARD (2023) were not legacy-era retreads. They were proper albums that worked on their own terms. Each member has also built a significant solo career: Taemin is considered one of K-pop’s most artistically complete soloists, Key has become a genuine pop personality in his own right, and Onew has acted in major drama productions alongside continued music output.

In 2024, both Taemin and Onew moved to independent agencies for solo activities while remaining SHINee members — a structure that reflects how the K-pop industry has matured around long-running groups.

Where to start listening

“Replay” (2008) — The debut. Gentle, melodic, and still one of the most distinctive first singles in K-pop history.

“Lucifer” (2010) — The song that defined their peak era and still sounds like nothing else from that year.

“View” (2015) — A decade into their career, this funky, effortless single remains a fan favorite and one of K-pop’s best summer songs.
