A South Korean girl group under ADOR, a subsidiary of HYBE. They debuted on July 22, 2022, with the single “Attention,” followed by their first EP New Jeans on August 1, 2022. Their fandom is called Bunnies.
The group was formed under creative director Min Hee-jin, formerly of SM Entertainment, and originally consisted of five members: Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein. As of late 2025, the group continues as four members — Minji, Hanni, Haerin, and Hyein — following Danielle’s contract termination by ADOR in December 2025.
The debut that changed the conversation
NewJeans arrived in 2022 with a deliberately understated approach that immediately stood out. No elaborate pre-debut campaigns, no survival show origins — just five songs and a music video dropped with minimal warning. The aesthetic was Y2K-influenced and nostalgic without feeling retro, and the sound pulled from early 2000s R&B, electropop, and dance music in a way that felt fresh.
“Attention” and “Hype Boy” from their debut EP caught on rapidly, spreading through TikTok and YouTube before most audiences had even processed that a new group had debuted. By the end of 2022, NewJeans were being discussed as one of the most significant K-pop debuts in years — not just commercially, but stylistically. Their visual and sonic approach influenced a wave of aesthetic choices across the industry in the following year.
What made them different
Most 4th-generation K-pop groups follow a fairly established promotional structure. NewJeans did not. The group consistently released music in ways that felt casual and direct — dropping songs with little warning, keeping the aesthetic deliberately simple, and focusing on the music rather than elaborate concept rollouts.
The strategy worked because the music was strong enough to carry it. “Ditto” (2022) and “OMG” (2023) showed a more emotional, atmospheric side. “Super Shy” (2023) became their most internationally accessible single. “ETA” (2023) leaned into a harder, more confident direction. Across all of it, the group’s sound remained cohesive — something that isn’t easy to sustain across rapid releases.
Where they stand now
NewJeans’ career has been complicated by a prolonged legal dispute between ADOR, HYBE, and the group’s members. Following the departure of CEO Min Hee-jin from ADOR in late 2024, the members announced their intention to terminate their contracts, briefly promoted under the name NJZ in early 2025, and ultimately returned to ADOR following a court ruling in October 2025 upholding the validity of their contracts. Danielle’s contract was separately terminated by ADOR in December 2025.
A full group comeback is expected in the second half of 2026.
Where to start listening
“Attention” (2022) — The debut. Quietly confident and immediately distinctive.
“Ditto” (2022) — Their most emotionally resonant single, and the one that proved the debut wasn’t a one-time thing.
“Super Shy” (2023) — Their widest-reaching hit internationally and the most immediately accessible entry point.
