LOS ANGELES — In a significant move for the global music industry, the Recording Academy announced on Tuesday that it will introduce a “Best Asian Pop Music Performance” category for the 69th Grammy Awards in 2027, according to the organization’s official press release.

The new category follows the Academy’s recent addition of Best African Music Performance in 2024, reflecting a broader effort to recognize music markets that have grown significantly through global streaming. For the K-Pop industry and the wider Asian music market, the announcement serves as a significant recognition of Asian pop music’s growing global presence.

The move comes as Asian pop music continues to expand its commercial footprint worldwide. K-pop groups have become regular fixtures on Billboard charts and global touring circuits, while Japanese, Chinese, and Southeast Asian pop acts have increasingly attracted international audiences through digital streaming platforms.

2027 GRAMMY AWARDS: AT A GLANCE

  • 5 New Categories Added: Best Asian Pop Music Performance, Best Latin Song, Best R&B Collaboration, Best Traditional Pop Vocal, and Best Traditional Folk Album.
  • Best New Artist Extension: Artists can now be submitted for Best New Artist up to four times (previously limited to three).
  • Album of the Year (AOTY) Adjustment: Eligible albums now only require 66% of newly recorded material, lowered from the previous 75% threshold.

The Official Criteria & Language Rules

The Recording Academy described Asian pop as a major force in the global music marketplace and cited its growing influence as part of the rationale behind the category’s creation.

RULEBOOK EXCERPT: BEST ASIAN POP

“This category recognizes excellence in pop music performances that originate from or are heavily recognized in the Asian market (including K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop). Submissions must feature the meaningful use of one or more Asian languages. The award goes to the performing artist(s).”

This specific language requirement could create immediate eligibility questions for English-language releases. Several globally active Asian and K-pop-affiliated acts, including BTS, BLACKPINK, XG, and KATSEYE, have released English-language singles that performed strongly on the Billboard Hot 100 and global streaming platforms.

While the creation of the category ensures the field will have its own Grammy recipient, the Academy has not yet clarified how borderline cases—such as fully English pop tracks performed by Asian artists—will be evaluated. It remains to be seen whether these tracks will be mandated to compete in the General Pop fields or if exceptions will be made based on the artists’ primary market base.
