A South Korean-Chinese boy group under SM Entertainment, debuted on April 8, 2012. Current members are Suho, Xiumin, Baekhyun, Chen, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, Sehun, and Lay. Their fandom is called EXO-L.
The name comes from “exoplanet” — a planet outside our solar system. Their official greeting: “We are ONE! Hello, we are EXO!”
The group that defined a generation
EXO didn’t just succeed — they dominated. From 2013 to 2018, they were arguably the biggest act in K-pop, winning five consecutive Album of the Year awards at MAMA and appearing on the Forbes Korea Power Celebrity list every year in that stretch. Their 2013 debut album XOXO was the first Korean album to sell over a million copies in twelve years. By 2018, they had become the first South Korean artist who debuted in the 21st century to sell 10 million albums cumulatively.
The foundation of that run was “Growl” — a smooth, synchronized single from 2013 that became a cultural touchstone. If you want to understand what 3rd-gen K-pop sounded and looked like at its peak, that song is the clearest reference point.
What made them different
EXO launched as twelve members split into two sub-units — EXO-K promoting in Korean, EXO-M in Mandarin — a deliberately ambitious structure designed to capture both the Korean and Chinese markets simultaneously. Three Chinese members (Kris, Luhan, Tao) left through legal disputes between 2014 and 2015, and the group continued as nine.
What held them together through those turbulent years was the quality of the members themselves. EXO have long been regarded as one of K-pop’s strongest vocal groups — D.O., Baekhyun, and Chen in particular have received consistent praise from industry figures. Alongside that, the group’s choreography and stage presence set a standard for the era.
Where they stand now
Most EXO members completed their mandatory military service between 2019 and 2024, which naturally slowed group activity. But the group hasn’t dissolved — they are preparing a full-length comeback in 2026, with Lay confirmed to participate despite having departed SM in 2022. It would be their first full group release in several years.
Individual members have stayed highly active in the meantime. D.O. has built a parallel career as a film actor. Kai is one of the most prominent fashion figures to come out of K-pop, with major brand deals and well-received solo albums. Baekhyun became one of the best-selling solo artists in the industry before a legal dispute with SM temporarily paused his group involvement.
Where to start listening
“Growl” (2013) — The song that made them. Still one of the most iconic K-pop singles of the decade.
“Monster” (2016) — A harder, more intense direction that showed the group’s range and became their first Billboard World Digital Songs number one.
“Power” (2017) — Lighter and more playful, it became their most internationally accessible hit and introduced them to a lot of new listeners outside Asia.
