The song isn’t out.
The music video isn’t out.
At the time of writing, all we have is a teaser.
And yet, we can’t stop thinking about it.

Maybe that’s the first sign that LE SSERAFIM, ILLIT, and KATSEYE are onto something.

A collaboration between three girl groups could have easily become a victory lap. Put everyone in expensive outfits, shoot a glossy video, let the fandoms celebrate, and call it a day.

Instead, the teaser leans into the weird. A seemingly sterile dentist’s office collides with unsettling close-ups of teeth and surreal, out-of-place objects that disrupt the usual glossy idol aesthetic. The mood swings abruptly between high-fashion stylish and intentionally uncomfortable. In other words, it feels genuinely memorable.

One thing we appreciate immediately is that this project doesn’t appear obsessed with being pretty. Of course, K-pop has always been visual. Beauty matters. Styling matters. Presentation matters.

But some of the most interesting moments in pop culture happen when artists stop chasing beauty and start chasing ideas. Even in teaser form, ‘ICONIC BY MISTAKE’ feels like it is aiming for the second category.

That alone makes it worth paying attention to.

The collaboration itself is fascinating because of what each group signifies. LE SSERAFIM represents one established version of global K-pop, while ILLIT represents another rapidly rising iteration. KATSEYE, meanwhile, may represent exactly where the industry is trying to go next.

Put all three in the same project, and the result becomes bigger than a single song—it starts to feel like a glimpse into a possible future, not just for HYBE, but for girl groups in general.

For years, K-pop has been expanding outward—into new markets, new languages, and new audiences. KATSEYE is one expression of that expansion, and a bold, cross-border project like this feels like another. Whether that future is exciting or terrifying is a conversation for another day. For now, we’re simply curious. And honestly, curiosity is underrated.

We’re not ready to judge the song. That would be unfair. When the full release arrives, we’ll do what we always do: listen carefully, watch closely, and write an honest review. Until then, we’re happy to sit with the anticipation.

Because a teaser has only one job.
Make people want to press play.

If the song is great, we’ll say it’s great.
If it isn’t, we’ll say that too.
But for now, at least, ‘ICONIC BY MISTAKE’ has already succeeded at one thing:
It made us want to press play.
