A South Korean singer-songwriter and actress under EDAM Entertainment, debuted on September 18, 2008. Born Lee Ji-eun, she performs under the stage name IU — a combination of “I” and “U,” representing the idea that music connects people. Her fandom is called Uaena.

IU holds the record for the most number-one singles on Korean charts of any artist in history.

Not just a K-pop artist

IU is frequently categorized as K-pop, which is accurate in the broadest sense — she is a Korean popular musician. But her sound is distinct from what most international listeners associate with the term. She is a singer-songwriter whose catalog spans folk-pop, jazz-influenced ballads, R&B, and polished pop production. She writes or co-writes much of her own material. There are no synchronized dance routines, no group choreography — just an artist with an exceptionally strong voice, precise songwriting instincts, and a career that has now lasted nearly two decades.

That career includes five studio albums, each representing a genuine evolution. From the teen pop of her early years through the mature, introspective sound of Palette (2017) and LILAC (2021), she has built one of the most consistent discographies in Korean music.

Music and acting, simultaneously

IU is also one of Korea’s most respected actresses — a combination that is rare at her level in either field. Her role in the tvN drama My Mister (2018) earned widespread critical acclaim and a Best Actress nomination at the Baeksang Arts Awards. Her 2025 Netflix series When Life Gives You Tangerines became one of the platform’s most-watched Korean productions of the year and earned her Best Actress at the Blue Dragon Series Awards.

Gallup Korea named her Singer of the Year in 2014, 2017, and 2025 — the only artist to win three times. In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked her the 135th greatest singer of all time.

Where to start listening

“Good Day” (2010) — The breakthrough. The triple high note live performance on YouTube is one of the great K-pop vocal moments.

“Palette” (2017) — Her mid-career statement. Immediately beautiful and emotionally rich.

“Love Wins All” (2024) — Her most recent major single, and possibly her finest.
