A South Korean boy group under SM Entertainment, introduced in January 2016. NCT stands for “Neo Culture Technology” — a concept built around the idea of unlimited members divided across multiple city-based sub-units. As of 2026, the group operates through six active sub-units: NCT U, NCT 127, NCT Dream, WayV, NCT DoJaeJung, and NCT Wish. Their fandom is called NCTzen.
Across all sub-units, NCT has recorded over 45 million album sales in Korea — making them the best-selling K-pop act of all time.
The concept
NCT was designed to be unlike any group that came before it. Rather than a fixed lineup, SM introduced a system of rotating and city-specific units: NCT U (rotational, project-based), NCT 127 (Seoul-based, debuted July 2016), NCT Dream (originally a teen unit, debuted August 2016), and WayV (China-based, Mandarin-language, debuted 2019). The “unlimited members” concept was officially capped in late 2023 with the announcement that NCT Wish would be the final sub-unit.
For new listeners, this structure can feel complicated — but in practice, each sub-unit operates largely as its own group with its own sound and fanbase. NCT 127 is the most internationally active of the units, with a harder, more experimental sound. NCT Dream skews younger and more vibrant. WayV focuses on the Chinese market.
Why they matter
NCT 127’s 2018 single “Simon Says” topped the Billboard World Digital Songs chart and established the unit internationally. Their 2024 album Walk sold over a million copies in its first week. NCT Dream’s The Dream Show 3 concert series sold out across multiple Asian cities. Across all units, NCT have toured globally and maintained consistent chart presence for nearly a decade.
Leader Taeyong, widely regarded as one of K-pop’s strongest performers, completed his military service in December 2025 and is expected to return to group activities. Member Mark left NCT and SM Entertainment in April 2026.
Where to start listening
NCT U — “The 7th Sense” (2016) — The debut. A slow-burn, atmospheric track that signaled immediately that SM was doing something different.
NCT 127 — “Simon Says” (2018) — Hard, confident, and the song that introduced the unit to a global audience.
NCT Dream — “Ridin'” (2020) — The clearest entry point into Dream’s warmer, more youthful sound.
